Today's Globe asked whether Councilor Tobin's plan for making local driving safer will work.
No. (Are they even serious with the question in the first place?)
No, printing 500 red-and-white "Slow Down Boston" signs will not work. Who has time to read street signs when they're speeding down a residential street? For that matter, who has time to pay attention to pedestrians or sidewalks when they've got places to go? Besides, I thought it was illegal for citizens to post their own traffic signs on city streets.
C'mon, Councilor, get real. Use the traffic cops we have to enforce the law. Add more speed bumps and traffic calming roadway designs around the city (we already have some examples of those in JP). And finally, when the roads are repaved in the spring, repaint the friggin crosswalks and lane markers! How many of us have seen or been involved in close calls coming out of the I-93 tunnel or just walking across some of our own streets? Lack of signage is not the problem. A combination of lack of proper road maintenace, traffic enforcement, and driving manners is.
